| In the Beginning... |
|
We know we want to create a newsletter, but
we don't know where to start. We have not written to friends or
family in a long time. There has been so much happening in the past few
years that we are not sure how far back to go.
This site was originally conceived by the three of us as
a place to store our online photo album. The free services we were using
with MSN was just not cutting it anymore. Ana no longer had an online
portfolio and people were constantly asking her to see her work. Anthony
thought it would be great to have a little space to share some of his
hobbies, and Alexander wanted a place to show off his blossoming
cartooning style, among other things. It made sense to put together a
website to share our interests with our family and friends. If anyone else
happens to wander in, then so be it.
The family site has things of interest to the three of
us, and the individual sites delve more into our individual realms. The
physical work of putting the site together fell upon Ana's shoulders,
being that she is the graphic designer, web-mistress of the family.
The content is a collaborative effort with Ana doing the majority of it in
the first stages of the design process.
Ana used Microsoft FrontPage® in the creation of this
site as a means to teach herself how to use the application. In the past
all websites created by Ana were created using HTML hand coding. Ana
had "No Comment" when asked how she liked the application. Nonetheless, as
you can see, she has learned to maneuver around the program. Her next task
is to learn how to create and add her own "themes" to the application so
she does not have to use the pre-fab ones that Microsoft so generously
provides. |

Anthony is a clinical virologist at the
laboratory located at St. Joseph's Health Centre although he technically
works for LHSC. He has been working there for 15 years.
Anthony continues to struggle with his heart disease and
diabetes. For those of you who don't know: he had a quadruple by-pass
seven years ago. The diabetes was diagnosed 3 or 4 years ago. So
far, he has managed to stay off insulin, however, if he cannot keep the
diabetes under control with diet and pills, that is the next step.
This is a constant struggle. He has his good and his bad days. Mostly he
is tired and sleeps a lot.
Anthony is still an avid reader. The three of us belong
to a science fiction reading club so he has been reading a lot more science fiction of late.
However, as you know, he always has a book or two on the go (in a variety
of genres). When not reading, he enjoys a variety of music, good
films, or interesting and informative documentaries on the television.
Anthony is also a master of search engine use and is often edifying
himself with online information (quite often on the documentary he just
watched). Let's face it, Anthony is an "Information Junkie". |

Ana is no longer in business for herself,
although she still takes on an occasional design job. She now works in the
residential customer service department at Bell Canada. She is on the
phone all day speaking to customers, meeting their needs, and selling them
Bell products. She likes talking to people all day.
Ana's health, with age, is also going downhill. The
arthritis in her joints is getting worse. She is in constant pain in her
back, legs, and shoulders. The headaches are constant and worse than
when she was younger, but nothing can be found to explain them. She too is
diabetic, but not as far gone as Anthony. She too tires easily and
given a choice, would spend days on end sleeping (she does not have that
choice!)
Ana still enjoys her artwork and finds it more
gratifying to create pieces without the hassle of a deadline. She also
enjoys working on the computer. Yes, she still reads quite a bit,
and not just computer manuals either! Lately she has been reading science
fiction, as well as her beloved biographies. Actually, she reads
anything she can get her hands on. Recently she read (and re-read)
everything that Margaret Laurence wrote, plus biographies on Laurence.
It was a very gratifying project. Ana says that she and Margaret Laurence
could have been good friends if they had known each other. |

Alexander is Anthony and Ana's favorite
topic. He is 12 now, and taller than Ana. He is attending grade 7 at
St. Francis Separate School and enjoying it. He is doing very well at
school. Alexander is the busy one of the family.
He still plays the violin (as a matter of fact, he has been putting on
little performances at his school and for the school's church services).
He also plays cornet, keyboards, nose-flute, recorder, penny-whistle,
harmonica, and anything else he can get his hands on. Oh, and he
SINGS!
And, boy can he sing! A few years back he was
asked to join a church choir. Alexander did. Alexander discovered he really enjoys
singing (it helps that he has a beautiful angelic voice). He went to
England with the choir last winter and sang in St. Paul's Anglican
Cathedral in London
ENGLAND!. It was a marvelous experience for him.
Alexander also discovered he likes opera. Yes,
OPERA! Three years ago he pleaded with us to take him to see an
opera that UWO was putting on, and we did. Well, Ana and Anthony
discovered they like opera too (We have since been attending performances
whenever possible).
On the trip to National Music Camp last year Alexander
announced that he wants to be an opera singer. At first Anthony
thought he was joking, but no, he was serious. He requested that we
find voice lessons for him. We went searching and were given a few
names to contact. One of the people we contacted is a professor at UWO.
This professor said he does not take children as students but to come
up to the university and he would listen to Alexander sing and perhaps he
could direct us. Alexander auditioned for him. The professor decided to a take Alexander as a student after all.
Alexander enjoys his weekly lessons at the university.
Alexander also audits an opera performance course at the university.
Alexander loves to sing, and has been making wonderful progress since
starting the voice lessons. This Christmas Alexander had two solos at with
the church choir!
When not doing things musical, Alexander enjoys to read,
watch television, draw cartoons, and perform magic. Alexander
performs his illusions for the amusement of his parents, friends, family
members, classmates, servers at our favorite restaurants, and the children where he volunteers his time.
As you can see, Alexander is pretty busy. But, he
loves it! |
